My 7 Links: A Look Back at the Last Five Months

Tripbase recently started a new project meant to connect travel bloggers around the world & share their awesome content. I was nominated to participate by my awesome fellow travel writer Matt, editor of Landlopers, & I have to say it was fun to look back over all my posts from the last five months. At the end of this post, I’ll nominate a few travel bloggers to continue on the project.

1. Your most beautiful post

A hard one to decide, as I always try to feature interesting, beautiful, intriguing photography on my blog. I think my favorite, visually, was a Foto Friday post on Barcelona. Despite everywhere I’ve been, this colorful, architecturally interesting, vibrant city still remains one of my favorites to photograph.Foto Friday: Barcelona

2. Your most popular post

Perhaps not surprisingly, my most popular post is the one I wrote after a flight I was on made an emergency landing due to the cabin depressurizing. Of course, like a good travel blogger, I was too busy Tweeting & taking photos to really be scared. The picture I Tweeted after I landed has been viewed over 10,000 times & appeared on international news. So much fuss over such a silly little incident…So the oxygen masks really do workJust in case you were curious, my second most popular post is my review of the Inn at the Market in Seattle, one of my favorite hotels in the entire country.3.Your most controversial post
When I posted one day that I was yearning to travel & feeling incomplete with so few trips planned this year, I never expected to get such a backlash. My inbox was full of messages telling me that I “should be happy with my life,” & that I’m “running for something,” & perhaps, my favorite, “your yearning sounds like a curse.”

Personal: A Yearning

4. Your most helpful post
I’d like to think that a lot of my posts are helpful, as my blog is really geared toward helping others get the most of their travel. Some of my most popular posts are Top 10 lists & hotel reviews. I’d like to think my most helpful post(s) were my Barbados Top 10, parts 1 & 2. It’s an island I have gotten to know well over the past four years, with six visits there, & I love sharing my love of the place, people, culture & food.

5. A post whose success surprised you
I wrote a post on touristy photos, vs travel photography, following an intense discussion about the differences between the two in one of the weekly travel chats I participate in on Twitter. I never knew it would be my third most viewed post.Tourist6. A post you feel didn’t get the attention it deserved
I put a lot of work into all my blog posts, so any time one doesn’t garner much feed back or many page views, it can be a little disappointing. One of my favorite informational pieces has been my Top 10 list for New York City. The Internet is saturated with NYC “best of’s,” so it’s probably not surprising that this one doesn’t stand out. But I think we would all like to believe that our suggestions are the best. Just reading it makes me want to book a trip to this magical place… now.Best of New York City

7. The post that you are most proud of
Although the idea of this exercise was to dig back through your blog’s archives, the post I am most proud of is actually a very recent one. I usually write very “non-narative” on this blog – meaning I’m conveying information & passing along tips, not really telling a story. While I was at a recent travel blogging conference, I took a great workshop on narrative writing, something that has always interested me, but I’ve never really been brave enough to do outside the confines of my travel journal. My post on the train journey from Seattle to Vancouver is my first attempt at sharing a narrative piece. I’m pretty proud of it, & my bravery in posting it.

Riding the Rails

I’m hoping some of my favorite bloggers will carry on this great project:

The Wander Life
The Opinionated Wanderlust
