Alexandria, VA: Non-Fourth-of-July Fireworks

In Alexandria, we roll a little differently from the rest of the country. While many places across the nation adjust the schedule of their Independence Day fireworks to fit work schedules (holding them on Saturday instead of Sunday, etc.), here in Alexandria, we totally skip the whole Fourth of July thing. Why?

Because our great city celebrates its birthday just a week later. Founded in 1749, & incorporated into a city in 1852, Alexandria has seen its fair share of action over the years, including being occupied by Union troops for four years during the Civil War. But things have settled down now & we’re generally just a nice friendly community.

The biggest advantage of the whole “fireworks not really on the 4th of July” thing is that it gives residents a chance to take in DC’s really great Independence Day fireworks. Although this year, we took the route of watching them on TV – if you’ve ever had the displeasure of riding the Metro following the fireworks, you would too.

Last Saturday, after a really good BBQ sandwich & glass of local beer at T.J. Stones, we walked down to the Alexandria waterfront to watch the rockets red glare.
