Vancouver: You Stole My Heart

After my experience there, I am officially ready to officially change Vancouver’s motto from “By Sea, Land, and Air We Prosper” to “Vancouver: Nicest People, Prettiest Scenery & All Around Great Place.” Because it’s absolutely true. I have never been to a city with nicer people. True story: I was trying, rather unsuccessfully, to hail a cab downtown during morning rush hour. After about 15 minutes of walking up & down streets, arm hanging in the air, I was about to give up when a woman walked up to me. Instead of mugging me or asking for money (that’s the DC in me talking), she asked if I needed help & wanted her to call me a cab on her cell phone. Vancouver: capital of nice.

Everywhere you look in Vancouver, there’s something to look at. Historic, architecturally interesting buildings. Snow capped mountains bordering the beautiful harbor (that’s harbour to you Canadians out there) dotted with sea planes. A Starbucks… across the street from another Starbucks (they are serious about their coffee). It’s sensory overload in the best way possible. Heck, even the view from the airport is amazing!

Vancouver’s harbour caters to cruise ships (& yes, that is not the American spelling for harbor!)

I was lucky enough to visit Vancouver when their beloved Canucks were playing in the Stanley Cup – a championship they eventually lost. Growing up cheering for (American) football, I am familiar with passionate fans. But I have never seen such a passionate city. I am sure that I was the only one not wearing a Canucks jersey on the Friday of Game 5 & am positive that I am the only one who was not out partying until 3am after they won. It’s impossible to equate it to any sport in the United States, as hockey is truly a national sport in Canada.

Vancouver stole my heart the minute I stepped foot in the city. I can’t wait to return.
