Within the last six months, I’ve visited Vermont twice, for my first & second time. Here are five reasons why I’m so in love with the Green Mountain State.
1. The Green Mountains
Sure, they’re not the craggy, sky high Rocky Mountains in America’s west, but boy are they beautiful. The highest peak, Mt. Mansfield, tops off at 4,393 feet & makes for great skiing or hiking in the quaint town of Stowe.
In the summer, the mountains truly are green, full of evergreens & lush foliage.
But in the winter they turn almost black & white – with naked trees dividing bright white ski runs.
It’s a majestic beauty that I just don’t get living in the Mid-Atlantic – or in an urban neighborhood.
2. The craft beer
I am a sucker for a good craft beer, especially a super hoppy IPA, & Vermont does not disappoint in this area. The state is home to 29 craft breweries: from the tiny Alchemist Brewery in Waterbury (all they make is an awesome double IPA) to the now famous Magic Hat Brewery in South Burlington.
One of my favorite Vermont beers that has started popping up elsewhere in the country is Long Trail. After a long day of skiing or hiking, their IPA cannot be beat.
3. The comfort food
Creemees. Blueberry pancakes with Vermont maple syrup. Cabot Extra Sharp Chedder. Flatbreads. Pimetto cheese balls. These, & more, are all amazing comfort foods that I’ve had in Vermont. After all, you need something to go with the craft beer, right?
4. Lake Champlain
I was awe inspired the first time I saw Lake Champlain. This beautiful, giant lake runs along the New York-Vermont border up into Canada.
You think good sunsets are limited to the beach? Then you haven’t seen one over Lake Champlain!
5. The factories.
I don’t know if we were just feeling touristy or if there really are an abundance of factory tours in Vermont, but when we were there last August, we went hog wild. Cabot Cheese factory, Magic Hat brewery, Vermont Teddy Bear factory, Shelbourne Vineyard tour (the only vineyard in Vermont!), Lake Champlain Chocolates factory. So many factories, so little time!
