There’s nothing I like better than exploring a new location by the water & one of the easiest & most calming ways to do that is from the seat of a kayak. Amelia Island has a few different kayak rental places, but Kayak Amelia provides some of the most reasonable prices & longest rental times. They’re also conveniently located halfway up the island in the marshland, so you can north or south.

We jumped in two kayaks mid-afternoon one day for a northern paddle through the marsh & up to a sandbar which leads out to the ocean.

It was so incredibly calming paddling among the marshland. We saw tons of birds, including several Snowy Egrets & Great Blue Herons.

Once we made it to the sandbar, we got out of our boats & walked around a bit, digging our toes in the powdery white sand.

Know if you go…

  • Make sure you know your paddling strength if you head out late in the day – Kayak Amelia closes promptly at 5pm. Depending on the tides, you could be in for a heck of a paddle back to the shop.
  • If you’re not familiar with the area, or aren’t sure about your kayak skills, consider a tour. I love kayak tours because the guide is always full of information on the local area & local wildlife.
  • Trust us: kayaking in two single kayaks is much easier than kayaking in a tandem, even if you’re both beginners!
