Last August, on our fabulous New England & Canada Royal Caribbean cruise, one of our stops was in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The city surprised us both & ended up being one of our favorite ports. After spending the morning exploring up & down the hilly streets of Halifax, we boarded a charter bus & made the hour drive southwest to quaint, charming fishing village of Peggy’s Cove. With a year-round population of 46 residents, Peggy’s Cove is home to a very famous lighthouse, making it one of the busiest tourist attractions in all of Nova Scotia. Situated right where the Atlantic Ocean & St. Margarets Bay meet, the lighthouse sits on glaciers carved out about 20,000 years ago. Peggy’s Cove is perhaps best known as the site where Swissair Flight 111 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean in 1998, killing all 229 people on board. Our tour guide, & others we spoke with, shared vivid memories of that day & a beautiful memorial has been set up to the victims of the disaster just outside of town.
When we first pulled into Peggy’s Cove, we were a little concerned at the sight of several other tour buses – would this just be a big tourist bruhaha? But they soon departed & our group of 50 or so had the town streets to wander on our own. If you’re visiting this part of Canada, Peggy’s Cove, & the other fishing villages that dot the coast, are definitely worth a visit.

Great shots of our village. So Glad you enjoyed your visit. The Peggy’s Cove Area is home to many great artists – painters, photographers, potters, etc. who enjoy depicting the village in all her many moods.
