One of the best ways to really soak in the Finger Lakes is on the water. Many people have motorboats on the lakes, but I prefer a slower mode of transportation: the kayak. While we were visiting the Finger Lakes region, we stopped by Keuka Watersports to grab some kayaks to take out on Keuka Lake.
When we rolled up to their outpost at the south end of the lake, they were still putting their dock together: we were their first paddlers of the summer! It was an honor we were more than happy to accept as climbed through the mud to hop into the kayaks & started paddling. Even though the lakes are large, paddling is relatively smooth, with the only chop coming from boats as they motored past on the other side of the lake.
We thought about paddling down to the mouth of the arms of the lake (picture Keuka Lake in a giant Y), but soon realized it was too far to make it in the hour rental we had (turns out, it was about three miles one way). So we leisurely paddled back to the dock past the magnificent vacation homes & tiny cottages along the law. Paddling along in a kayak is definitely my happy place – & Keuka Lake is one of the happiest places to do so.
Note: Our kayak rental was provided by Keuka Watersports; however, as always, all opinions are my own. Paddling in Keuka Lake really is my new happy place.
